Passkeys are a modern and secure method of authentication that eliminates the need for traditional passwords. You can set up a passkey in the Microsoft Authenticator app as follows:

What you need:

  • A device running Android 14 or later, or iOS 17 or later.
  • Microsoft Authenticator app installed on your device.
  • Multi-factor authentication (MFA) enabled for your account.

How to set up a passkey:

  1. Create a passkey:
    • After signing in, tap your account in the app and select “Create passkey”.
  2. Set up screen lock:
    • If screen lock is not yet configured on your device, you will be prompted to set it up.
  3. Enable Authenticator as a passkey provider:
    • For Android:
      • Go to “Settings” > “Passwords and accounts”.
      • Under “More providers”, select “Authenticator”.
    • For iOS:
      • On iOS 18: Go to “Settings” > “General” > “Passwords & Autofill”.
      • On iOS 17: Go to “Settings” > “Passwords” > “Password Options”.
      • Ensure “Autofill Passwords and Passkeys” is enabled and Microsoft Authenticator is selected.
  4. Finish the process:
    • Return to the Authenticator app and tap “Done” to confirm the setup.

After completing these steps, your account will have a passkey configured, allowing for more secure and convenient sign-ins without traditional passwords.
